Slavery
One of the major causes of The Civil War is slavery. The debate over slavery has been debated over and over among citizens and government officals for years. Northerners were in favor to stop the spread of slavery but Southerners were not. The Southereners argued that it was nessecary for the economy in colonies like South Carolina where slaves even sometimes outnumbered the whites. The Constituion only adressed this issue briefly.
Nat Turner
Nat Turner was a American slave leader. He belived that divine inspiration led him to the end of the slavery system. He led Nat Turners Rebellion. At the end of the rebellion he was tried in court, convicted , and killed. He played a very important part in the end to slavery.
Nat Turner's Rebellion
Led Nat Turner from Southhampton County Nat Turner's Rebellion was a very violent slave revolt that happened in 1831. Nat thaought that God told him to end slavery. So on a August night in 1831 he tried. Nat led a group of slaves and planed to kill all of their slaveholders and families in the county. At first the slaves attacked the family that held Turner as a slave. After that they killed about 60 white people in the community.Alot of innocent slaves about 100 were killed in effort to stop the rebellion. Nat led authorities on a wild chase around the county for six weeks. Before he was caught for trial he hid in caves and in the woods. Right before his trial he confessed that the revolt was worth his death and said "I am willing to suffer the fate that awaits me." He was exucted on the 11th of November 1831. Following the rebellion many states stregnthened their slave codes. Even though codes were stricter, slavery contunied to spread.
Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was famous for her daring work in the Underground Railroad. In the late 1840's Harriet had to leave her family. Before she left she promsied her family that she would return to lead them to slavery in the North. Tubman had journied back to the South about 19 times, and led her family and more than 300 skaves to freedom in the North. Alot of slaveholders really did not appreciate Tubman leading their slaves to freedom. At one point a reward of $40,000 was offered for the capture of Tubman. Harriet Tubman was very succesful in her work, her people appreciated her work deeply and even called her the Moses of her people.
The Undergropund Railroad
The Underground Railroad was a very famous part in American history. It was known as the "freedom train". This helped slaved people get to the North for freedom. In this video below tells information about it.
